Erin eyed her work folder on the bed, sighed and walked to the window. She just couldn’t make herself settle down to work. What did that kiss from David mean? A simple thank-you? It was innocent enough—but coupled with the look in his eyes— No! She was being foolish! No matter how nice he seemed, David Carlson was a ladies’ man, practiced in flirtation and seduction—just like Alayne’s Jerry. He was probably only flirting with her to ensure her cooperation for his big story. She’d do well to keep her mind on business and ignore the way he made her feel.

Erin stood a moment longer, looking out into the night, trying to convince herself she didn’t care that David was only using her. Trying to figure out how he had become so important to her. At last she sighed and headed for the closet to get her pajamas. She’d have to be more careful around David.

Erin washed and put cold cream on her face, then pulled off her T-shirt and slipped out of her jeans. Something crackled. She shoved her hand into the right pocket and pulled out the bits of trash she’d picked up to throw away. Among bent paper clips, broken rubber bands and a torn label off a file folder was the slip of paper she’d picked up off the floor. It looked like a memo of some sort.

Erin laid it on the sink, threw the rest of the stuff in the basket, shoved her dirty clothes in the hamper and pulled on her pajamas. The bed was going to feel good tonight! She carried the piece of paper over to the light on the chest by her bed and smoothed the wrinkles from it as best she could. There was a handwritten title at the top of the paper. Cat and Mouse. Hmm, that sounded like an interesting assignment. She relaxed back against the headboard and read the memo, seeking the identity of the student or tutor.
